Job Overview

Due to an increasing portfolio of carbon projects across Africa and Southeast Asia, Earth Systems is currently seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Earth/Environmental Scientist with a background in applied forestry research, forest carbon and/or nature-based accredited carbon project development to join our UK team.

As Forest and Carbon Scientist you will lead technical assessments for carbon offsets, including providing targeted consultancy services across the lifecycle of accredited nature-based carbon offset design from feasibility to PDD and validation/verification. You will interact with a range of predominantly private sector clients and non-profit project developers, providing high-quality reports and analysis on carbon offset design and feasibility. You will also play a role in advising clients on GHG emissions accounting/reporting (data collection, processing and analysis), climate change scenario assessment and the development of climate change risk assessments to international standards.

This is a great opportunity for an environmental professional with specific experience and skills in forest science, climate change consulting or nature-based carbon offset design to join our team to help develop and grow the Earth Systems’ Bristol office. You will have the opportunity to contribute high-quality scientific analysis towards some of the highest profile and significant carbon projects in the world. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience and skills in one or more of the following: forestry/REDD+, forest carbon inventories and the design / development of carbon feasibility studies, GIS/Remote Sensing/Earth Observation for land cover change, nature-based voluntary carbon offset projects and climate change in EIA. Applicants with a background in forestry science, earth science or climate change particularly encouraged to apply.      

Principal Duties

Responsibilities are expected to include:

  • Leading development of technical design assessments for forest carbon and sustainable land management voluntary carbon offset projects (VCS, Gold Standard, REDD+ etc);
  • Carbon accounting and modelling, remote sensing / GIS analysis related to project feasibility assessments and design studies for accreditation;
  • Preparation of figures / maps / tables and high quality technical reports;
  • Maintaining technical awareness of developments within carbon verification / accreditation, climate science relevant to both the work of Earth Systems and consultants’ technical background;
  • Project management of time-bound carbon and climate change consulting projects;
  • Preparation of cost estimates and proposals for potential clients; and
  • Routine travel for assignments throughout the Africa and Southeast Asia region.

What you bring

The successful applicant will have:

  • Strong background in applied forestry research, forest carbon, carbon accounting, REDD+ and/or nature-based accredited carbon markets and project development;
  • Expert skills in RS/GIS analytical techniques and earth observation methods relevant to accredited carbon offset design (esp. REDD+);
  • Have relevant environment or associated qualification(s) (preferably a MSc, PhD or DPhil);
  • Have a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience or postgraduate studies in the fields of forest science, environmental science, climate change, nature-based or land based carbon offsets;
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver reporting and analysis at a high technical standard;
  • The ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team;
  • Exceptional written and verbal English language communication skills (proficiency in a relevant second language will be highly regarded);
  • Passion and a strong interest in climate change solutions, forest conservation and the environment; and
  • An interest in, and ability to, travel internationally.

Report for The International Network for Acid Prevention

Earth Systems in collaboration with Okane Consultants, released a report providing new insight into ensuring low polluting mine operations, and more successful mine closure outcomes.

The report reviews conventional mine rock stockpile construction methods, and summarises improved construction technologies that are available to help improve water quality from mine wastes. Continued efforts to implement these technologies will help quantify their environmental and economic benefits.
